Hexagons of a Different Flavor

We had a wonderfully busy week and weekend, celebrating two of the kids’ birthdays and Father’s Day.  For me, the best part was getting to visit with lots of family.  My aunt and uncle were visiting from California, and my mom and brother were able to come visit as well.  Lots of crafting, video games, and cupcakes!

Ever since a friend of mine sent me a link for the hexagonal William-Sonoma cake pan, I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy it.  My husband and oldest son love playing the game HeroScape, and I realized I could frost the cake to look like the HeroScape terrain tiles.

This is just a plain chocolate cake mix.  I used decorator’s frosting, tinted to match the game pieces, and then pressed a fork into the frosting to look more like the tiles.

Then we added actual game pieces.  They spent quite a while discussing how to stage their battle between swamp guys and samurai.  Which side do you think will win?

Too fun! One of these days, I’m going to make this cake and frost it like a Grandmother’s Flower Garden.  (Or perhaps make two or three cakes and align them for an edible table runner!)  I loved the “pull-apart” nature of the cake pan.  No more kids fighting over who got the biggest piece!!

This weekend I also recieved my Inklingo mug rug from the swap I posted about last week.  I LOVE the diamond shape.  (And doesn’t the fabric match adorably with my grandmother’s coffee mug?!)  So cool!

Last week the kids and I also found a fabulous stuffed animal book.  I’ll be sharing more photos of those fun creations later this week.

Happy Stitching!

  1. That cake pan could be very versatile – will have to check out the WS store next time I am in the city. I love the idea of a diamond shaped mug rug…will add it to my EPP bucket list :)

Ooh- that’s a cute mug rug too! And I love, love, love the cake! I can just imagine the discussions that ensued about where to place everything (and I love that probably no one else would notice if anything was “amiss”) =0) Wish I could have been there!! Can’t wait to see your next hexagon cake! (In person please!) =0)
