Progress on Rainbow Flower

Over the Christmas holiday, I finished more flowers for my rainbow flower quilt, which I originally posted about here.

These are fun to hand piece with Inklingo.  I have no real plan for this quilt, aside from using up as much of my scrap stash as possible.  When I pulled these out for the picture, I was surprised at how many I had already finished.  It’s amazing what you can accomplish with fun little on-the-go projects like this.

So you can also see from this picture my rather sad excuse for a design wall.  I’m trying to figure out whether to buy or make one, as I find myself wishing for one more often lately.  What do you use for a design wall?  Are you a flannel tablecloth pinned to the wall kind of quilter, or have you invested money in one of the spiffy ones that rolls up and down, serves as a shelf for knicknacks, and also organizes your recipe collection?

I’m looking seriously into these:  Design-a-way, Cheryl Ann’s portable design wall,  or doing it myself with this great tutorial from Elizabeth Hartman.  Any thoughts?  Have you ever used any of these, or made your own?  Reviews are frustratingly hard to come by, so I would appreciate all input!!

Happy Stitching!

  1. Mine is rather homemade but works perfectly: it’s a batting like material I got at Joann’s that is push-pinned to the wall in my studio. It’s about 5 feet tall and 10 feet long. Lots of room for lots of bits! Everything sticks on it’s own unless it’s soemthing heavy with a ton of seams or points and then I might add just a pin or 2 to keep it from peeling off. I can’t imagine that it cost me more than $10 and that was 6 or 7 years ago.

No room for a design wall at my house, but Elizabeth Hartman can do no wrong in my mind. :) :)

Love the rainbow quilt by the way!

I have just discovered these (seriously, moments ago…) =0) I like the finished look of Elizabeth Hartman’s, but I think you are going to need much, much more space- go for the batting and push pins!! =0)

Loving the rainbow quilt. I want to attack my stash with things like this, too. Soon…. I think you’re going to need a big wall, so the Elizabeth Hartman or a slightly more polished version of what you have right now would by my suggestion. I don’t see you putting it away for many years :)

I got the second biggest bedroom in our house for a quilt room. (Very sweet hubby) I used 2 sheets of Owens corning foamular 3/4″ x 4x8ft rigid insulation ($14/sheet) and a queen size flannel top sheet. So mine is huge and all things considered very cheap. I nailed the sheets of insulation to the wall and then pinned the flannel sheet over it. Large quilt pieces still need to be pinned to the wall but small blocks stick perfectly.

Using a flannel sheet isa great idea! I was daunted by the thought ofpiecing flannel yardage for a big wall. Thank you, Dawn!
